A homeless guy at the LL Bean

It was one of those frigid days, probably around 20°, I was about to grab lunch at Whole Foods and I saw a guy dressed pretty raggedly with a long beard sitting outside near the LL Bean store. He had a sign that read “HOMELESS, ANYTHING HELPS”. As I drove by I froze inside for a second, it was one of those gut check moments. I knew that I should go talk to him and help him out; but I didn’t right away. I went and ate first (Good job John).
After I finished I felt like God was telling me to go find him, so I prayed and asked God what my focus should be; and the Scripture I had recently been going through came to mind. It is out of the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 4 verse 18. It says “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor….”; the rest is really cool as well but this part was the focus point. So I had my plan, but now I had to find him again.

I wound up walking all over the mall and finally found him outside again. I invited him into the mall to stay warm so we could talk. I found out that he was only 24 years old and was sleeping on and off in missions or in the park since summer time. He had a job but got laid off, this was just a difficult time in his life. The good thing was that he was hopeful about getting a job soon. We spoke about a lot but most importantly I shared with Him the good news of Jesus; according to him it was in a way he’s never heard it before. He had grown up Catholic, never experiencing who Jesus is. He had never made the decision to allow God to be a part of His life. During the conversation he made comments like “People need to hear this stuff”!

He was ready to hear and receive Truth, it sunk in to him that he could personally have a relationship with God and didn’t have to depend on anyone else for it. That he is loved by God, that he a child of God, that God will never leave him, that there is purpose for him, that the truth of John 3:16 and 1 John 1:9 applies to him. He told me he was in a place to have that real conversation with God to allow Him in. Praise Jesus.

What God continues to confirm for me is that people need to hear the Truth of Jesus from someone fully convinced themselves of how amazing Jesus is, with confidence and some passion. People need a glimpse of the Jesus package that nothing else can compare to.

I’m in the process of learning as I stretch myself, I definitely don’t always capture the moment but I’m trying. My purpose with this post as you can see is a little different than the others. This is for the one who realizes that Jesus is real and what He did for you; but you want to be more for Him and might not be sure how. I know exactly where you are and how you feel. It’s one step at a time, moving forward, spending time with Him, studying the Word and preparing yourself (Make it important in your life) to take action for Him. Check out Matthew 10:32 “Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.” I’ve seen clearer who God wants me to be as I’ve taken risks for him (Typically having to drop any pride or care of what someone else thinks about me), but risk in faith is a cool combination, because then Gods super invades our natural and He gets the credit. I believe God is looking for people to move through, we just have to get over our selves (I have to fight to do that regularly) and make a move. People are hurting and need someone to take a moment to care, we don’t know what they are going through until we ask. God is on a mission for the hearts and minds of His creation and we get to help Him; the eternity of those around us is in the balance every day.

So I encourage you to consult with God on the topic, pay attention to the Holy Spirits nudgings, start conversations and watch what can happen. There is nothing like it.

Never give up and stay in pursuit. I’m excited for you!

Check this verse, I love it.

…. I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.  So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.

Hebrews 13:5-6
